It’s no secret that COVID-19 has taken a toll on our motivation when it comes to working from home. We all might sleep in just a little bit later each day, stay in our pajamas and lounge just a little bit longer, and take one or five too many breaks when trying to complete a project. Quarantine, although chaotic, has created a relaxed environment that requires a high amount of self control and determination to stay on track. Getting up each day and focusing on work might seem impossible to some, which is why it is important to exercise these simple tasks to stay on track while working from home.
Create a Routine
First and foremost, create a routine and stick to it. Wake up at the same time each day and begin your workday at the time you would at the office. This will help improve your concentration and productivity while leaving plenty of time to plan out your day. Avoid hitting snooze just because you can and at all costs, do not linger in bed glued to your phone. Start your day organized and determined to get work done.
Keep a Clear Workspace
Create a designated work space/area in your home that is clear from any distractions (maybe somewhere far from the kitchen pantry if you are anything like me) and be sure to maintain an orderly space. Managing an organized desk will keep your eyes from wandering to the next project or mess you need to address and will help keep you focused.
Use a Planner
Go back to the basics and utilize a tangible planner. Although it may seem old school, steer away from digital forms to avoid distractions and write out each task and responsibility that needs to be completed. This simple exercise assists in time management and keeps you mentally organized. Write out each task in order of importance, starting with the most important at the top. For full effect, plan out the length of each task and assign them to certain times throughout the day. Be sure to include an appropriate amount of time for breaks to refuel and unwind.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle and Mindset
In order to work efficiently, one must maintain a healthy mindset and lifestyle. It is important to stay active for our physical and mental health. Whether it be a quick fifteen minute walk around the block during a work break or a routine morning workout, anything helps. Staying at home all day can be extremely tedious so be sure to get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Quarantine has created a serious blockade on socializing which is also key to a healthy mindset, but it does not have to. Using platforms such as Zoom, Google Hangout, and Facetime are great ways to connect with friends and family while still maintaining your distance. Lastly, maintain a healthy diet. Being trapped at home can lead to the nasty habit of snacking, so be careful what you consume. We all know snacking is inevitable, so try cutting up power foods like fruits and veggies to pick on throughout the day. A healthy diet provides our bodies the fuel it needs in order to be energized and efficient!
